 John with Louie Bellson 1975
John (pictured here with Louie Bellson in 1975) was born in Bristol, his first instrument was the violin which he started at the age of six, and he continued on this until he was thirteen. He also took up the piano when he was eight, and studied for four years. When he was eleven he took up orchestral percussion, and when thirteen, he transferred to drums.
His first professional job was with the Salisbury Arts Theatre Company at the age of sixteen. He then appeared in gigs in Bristol with a local band until his call up for National Service in 1952. He signed on for three years so he could become as Army bandsman in the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment, playing tympani and percussion, and drums with the dance band section. During his time in the army he played at the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and he remarks, "I shall never forget that 'gig'! I think it was 19 miles that we marched that day. We were one of the leading bands, marching behind four horses of The Household Cavelry. Phew... need I say more!" On demobilisation, he found employment at one of Butlins Holiday Camps and came to London in 1956.
Over the past forty years, John has worked with many celebrated people in the entertainment world including Tommy Trinder, Betty Grable, Sir Harry Secombe, Honor Blackman, Roy Hudd, Mike Yarwood, Dave Allen, Libby Morris, Danny La Rue, Kenneth Connor, Cyril Fletcher, Nicholas Parsons, Will Gaines, jazz singer Joy Marshall and many more. He did a chat interview on his career for Radio Bristol in 1977. He also recorded some of the incidental music for the Tommy Steel film "The Duke Wore Jeans" under the baton of Sir Malcolm Amold, and has played and appeared in several Hammer Films. He spent many years as Secretary of the International Drummers' Association, in conjunction with "Crescendo International", for which he wrote a technical column for some 23 years, which will, no doubt, be recalled by many of our readers.
